Pirtek & Sparrow Schools pioneer hydraulic hose training program in South Africa

South Africa continues to be plagued with skills shortages partly due to our country’s inability to develop, utilize and retain enough human capital. The lack of investment in skills development has been identified as one of the critical restrictions to economic growth and employment creation by government.

The scourge of skills shortages contributes to building social ills and leaves our country facing high unemployment levels. Although South Africa is considered by many to be the Economic hub of Africa, a lack of skills presents our country as one of the most unequal societies in the world.

Sparrow FET College together with its various industry partners continues to champion the fight against this lack of skills shortages. Most recently, Sparrow FET College partnered with global hydraulics company, Pirtek to launch a new mining skills programme called the Fluid Power Hose Assemblies at NQF level 2 to 3.

The skills programme equips students with skills to make up hydraulic hose assemblies, identify and select the correct fittings, read and interpret basic fluid power engineering drawings and maintain safe working procedures.

The pilot programme fully funded by Pirtek produced a 100 percent pass rate with all 16 of the students who were enrolled in the programme successfully completing it. Nine of the 16 students were employed across different Pirtek branches.

Credit must also be given to the programme’s facilitator, Parker Shamiel. Shamiel has over 20 years worth of experience in the hydraulics industry working for big companies including SAB, DENEL, and GNKEM. He played a crucial role in the programme’s success

It is through such partnerships between Pirtek and Sparrow that more youth will continue to emerge qualified with critical skills that enable them to be self-reliant and obtain a place in the labour market. Such partnerships help eliminate the high levels of unemployment and eradicate levels of poverty.
